In the late afternoon of May 16, 2017, bodyguards and supporters of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attacked protesters in front of the Turkish embassy in Washington DC as the president was exiting the embassy. The protesters were voicing concern over the violent war being waged against Turkey’s Kurdish population in the east of the country. Also protesting were Americans of Armenian descent, speaking out against the WW1-era genocide by Turkey against the Armenian population.
