Update on false ‘Russia disinformation’ story promulgated by Canada’s foreign affairs minister, New Cold War.org, March 9, 2017
[A news compilation on New Cold War.org on March 8, 2017 reported the controversy surrounding the family history of Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland. The minister told a March 6 press conference in Ottawa that inquiries into that history constitute a ‘Russia disinformation’ campaign directed at her and the Canadian government. She and sympathetic journalists reported that the ‘disinformation’ has been aided and abetted by unnamed ‘pro-Russia’ websites.
[Canada’s largest circulation newspaper, the Toronto Star, has not reported the story to its readers. Meanwhile a column in the March 9 National Post is headlined ‘Of course it’s ‘news’ that Freeland’s grampa was a Nazi collaborator, even if the Russians are spreading it’. The column reads, “I doubt whether it is appropriate for almost any of us to sit in judgment on [Michael] Chomiak, if you consider how the Ukraine had been treated by Soviet Russia through decades of “civil” war and engineered Stalinist famine.” Michael Chomiak was the maternal grandfather of Minister Freeland and served as an editor of several pro-German newspapers in Poland and Austria during WW2. He died in 1984 in Canada where he settled with his family after the war.
[The other ‘blame the Russians for Nazi atrocities’ column to be published in Canada is authored by right-wing columnist Terry Glavin in the Ottawa Citizen on March 8, the very newspaper and date where Citizen columnist David Pugliese exposed the false ‘Russian disinformation spin by Minister Freeland. Glavin writes, “… the newspaper, Krakivski Visti, was the only intellectual lifeline left to the people of the dismembered Ukraine at the time, and… Freeland’s grandfather, the journalist Michael Chomiak, had no control over the Nazi mumbo jumbo he was obliged to print as the newspaper’s titular editor.” The Ottawa Citizen and National Post are part of the Postmedia daily newspaper conglomerate in Canada.]
